Rubio Says Syria Showing Positive Progress
Rubio noted that US Special Envoy for Syria Tom Barrack recently briefed congressional committees, providing transparency on the difficulties faced, and stated that while the process has had setbacks, the trajectory remains favorable. “Is it going to be easy? No. Is it going to be difficult? Absolutely. Is it going to have ups and downs and good days and bad days? No doubt about it,” he said, emphasizing that the US supports sustaining progress.
The secretary of state framed the US approach as a choice between allowing Syria to collapse into chaos—bringing mass migration, terrorism, and Iranian influence—or engaging constructively with Syrian authorities. “Guess what? We chose number two,” Rubio said, describing the outcome as far preferable to a fragmented, unstable Syria.
Rubio highlighted US efforts to prevent escapes of ISIS (Daesh) prisoners, attributing the success to direct engagement by President Donald Trump, who urged Syrian authorities to halt fighting to enable the transfer of thousands of detainees to Iraq. “Al-Sharaa did it. He's kept his word up to this point,” Rubio said, noting that these transfers mitigated the risk of future threats.
Earlier in January, the YPG/SDF terror group had released ISIS prisoners from al-Shaddadi prison in Hasakah province. Syrian authorities subsequently recaptured all detainees, holding the organization responsible, while US-supported coordination helped prevent further destabilization.
