Syria clarifies new Damascus airport radar is exclusively civilian
According to an official statement, the radar was introduced solely to support civil air navigation and the management of air traffic, with authorities stressing that it has no defense-related role. The announcement emphasized that the system is administered entirely by the country’s civil aviation authority and functions within the framework of domestic regulations and internationally accepted aviation standards.
In the statement, officials said that "the radar recently commissioned at Damascus International Airport is a purely civil radar, dedicated exclusively to civil air navigation and air traffic management purposes."
They further explained that the radar operates under "the full and direct authority" of the civil aviation body and is part of broader efforts to modernize aviation infrastructure, enhance flight safety, and improve the efficiency of airspace oversight.
"The Authority clarifies that this radar forms part of the ongoing modernization of civil aviation infrastructure, aimed at enhancing air safety and improving the efficiency of airspace management. It has no military function or non-civil application whatsoever," the statement added.
The announcement also reaffirmed adherence to the Chicago Convention on International Civil Aviation, along with the standards and recommended practices set by the International Civil Aviation Organization.
Additionally, officials dismissed "any attempt to politicize or militarize civil aviation infrastructure."
The clarification followed reports circulating in foreign outlets claiming that the radar could present a “major challenge to Israeli fighter jets.”
