Rebel Groups Shelling Leaves Two Security Forces Dead in Syria

(MENAFN) Two members of Syria’s internal security forces were killed in shelling by rebel groups in the southern province of Suwayda, local media reported Tuesday.

Media, citing an anonymous source, stated that mortar shells and drone strikes were launched by insurgent factions in the village of Rimat Hazem, located in the western part of Suwayda. The source further revealed that the rebels attempted to advance on security force positions, marking a fresh violation of a ceasefire agreed upon months ago.

The groups behind the attack were not immediately identified.

This assault occurred just a day after clashes between Syrian security forces and armed factions loyal to Hikmat al-Hajri, a prominent Druze leader in Suwayda. Media reported that armed Druze groups affiliated with al-Hajri launched attacks on Syrian army positions across several villages, including Al-Majdal, Rima Hazem, Walgha, Al-Mazraa, and Ateel, all situated in western Suwayda.

The violence also extended to residential areas in Al-Mazraa, prompting a military response from the Syrian army and triggering further clashes.

Since July 19, Suwayda has been under a ceasefire following a week-long conflict between Druze factions and Bedouin tribes, which resulted in hundreds of deaths.

In a separate development, Israeli forces conducted a raid Tuesday in the southern Quneitra countryside, marking another violation of Syrian sovereignty. Media reported that an Israeli patrol was stationed in Saida al-Maqriz village for nearly an hour before withdrawing. Neither the Israeli army nor Syrian authorities immediately commented on the incident.

According to Syrian government data, Israel has carried out more than 1,000 airstrikes in Syria and over 400 cross-border raids in the southern provinces since December 2024. Following the collapse of the Bashar al-Assad regime late that year, Israel extended its control over the Syrian Golan Heights by seizing the demilitarized buffer zone, breaching a 1974 agreement with Syria.
