Gunfire Targets Bus in Southern Syria, Two Reported Dead

(MENAFN) A passenger bus stopped at a fuel station along the highway linking the southern Syrian province of Sweida to the capital, Damascus, came under gunfire from unidentified attackers on Tuesday, killing two people and injuring several others, according to a Syrian state news agency.

A security source in Sweida told the news agency that the vehicle was targeted while parked near the station, and the wounded were rushed to hospital. Security forces have launched an operation to track down those responsible for the assault.

No group has claimed responsibility for the attack, leaving authorities investigating potential motives.

The incident comes amid heightened tensions in Sweida, where clashes erupted in July 2025 between Druze and Bedouin groups. A ceasefire was announced later that month, but it has been repeatedly violated by armed factions on both sides, raising fears of renewed violence.
