UK, Syria Hold Talks on Bilateral Ties, Regional Security
The discussions, held in the Syrian capital, included the presence of Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani and General Intelligence Service Director Hussein al-Salama, the agency reported.
Both parties explored opportunities to strengthen collaboration and exchanged views on ongoing regional and global developments, the news outlet added.
Al-Sharaa underscored Syria’s willingness to engage with “any genuine initiative that supports the region’s security and stability, provided it respects Syria’s sovereignty and independent national decision-making.”
Details about the length of Powell’s visit were not disclosed by the news outlet.
This diplomatic engagement follows last month’s visit by UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy to Damascus, marking the first visit by a British official in years.
On July 5, the UK Foreign Office officially announced the resumption of diplomatic relations with Syria after a 14-year hiatus.
In April, the UK government removed sanctions on 12 Syrian organizations, including the ministries of defense and interior, framing the decision as support for the Syrian population’s efforts to rebuild their nation and economy after the collapse of the Bashar al-Assad regime.
President Assad, who ruled Syria for nearly a quarter-century, fled to Russia in December, bringing an end to the Baath Party’s reign that began in 1963.
Since January, a new transitional government headed by Al-Sharaa has been in place.
